Every manufacturer who has survived a rush order knows the pause. That silence on the phone when a vendor does the math, realizes they shouldn't take your job — and wants the revenue anyway.

That's expertise showing its boundary. This process, for this part, at this material state.
The same logic governs cutting tool selection. The BXA20 tool holder is a specific solution for a specific range of turning applications. A generalist rarely announces their boundaries upfront. They wait until the part fails to reveal them. Which conversation would you rather have — “we don't stock that series, but here's who does” at 2 PM, or “the tool didn't hold tolerance, so your shipment's delayed” at 11 PM?
Also, I want to push back on something I hear constantly in procurement: that “one-stop shop” is automatically a good thing. In theory, it sounds convenient. In practice, the shops that claim to handle every process — machining, casting, 3D printing, heat treating, assembly — often end up generalizing in all of them. Specialists who know their limits will protect your deadlines better than generalists who pretend to have none.

It's also why I stopped evaluating suppliers by what they say they can do, and started evaluating them by what they admit they can't.

If they laugh and explain the difference — between hobby tool organization and clamped cutting tools, between DMLS and SLM, between a BXA20 and a universal blank — you've found a partner who thinks in outcomes.
If they say “sure, no problem, we can do that,” don't celebrate.
Ask for a spec sheet.
And check every number on it.
Because the most expensive sentence in manufacturing hasn't changed. It's still “we can do that.” Done.
